Ilonggo Lingo and Attitude

1. You have a relative,friend or siblings called "toto," "nening," "nonoy," "nene," "inday gamay, tiyay bulak, 'nong boy, 'nang baby, tita daku."

2. You scare children by telling them, "hala may kama-kama," "kuhaon ka sang ati," or "may kapre gapanabako sa likod kahoy."

3. When you're having a slight cold or you're under the weather, you refer to it as "ginasuro-sangko."

4. When children have cough mothers are prompt to say, "may kibit."

5. If you have an unexplained illness, it could be "may nasalapay ka nga mariit, gintandog ka sang kalag, gintuyawan ka, or may nasugat-an ka nga malain ginhawa." I wonder how bad it is^^

6. When you are working too hard- "naga bugas-bugas ah."

7. If asked, where are u heading to? You reply, "mangita sang kinawala" (which is already an oxymoron!)

8. You call loved ones as "pangga, 'ga and little children "tata."

9. If a bad thing happens to a person you hate, you quickly twitch your mouth and say, "ti man gingabaan."

10. If you are itching to hear news from others, you keep saying, "ti ano pa gid? ano pa gid kuno?"

11. When you size up someone, you talk at the back of your mind saying, "tan awon ta sa kurbada."

12. Daring and pachydermic persons are called "kabalan," "bongga-itan."

13. Naughty girls are despicably labeled as "B....."

14. Dimwits are poorly called "langka," "langto" or a much subtle term 'pobre espirito" while naive ones are emphatically commented as "waay gid buot."

15. We have some lingual-lapses especially as to the vowel sounds:
Dunna - for Donna Penk - for Pink Un - for "on" Lulu - Lolo
Root - for Ruth Juju - for Jojo Ahyan - for I(Ee)an Lula - Lola

16. "Bulang" is an equivalent of World Cup among middle-aged men and elders.

17. You have a "sinamakan" at home to "su-su" your grilled fish or meat.

18. You get your bread from Tinapayan, Wewin's, JD Bakeshop or Julie's.

19. When you ran out of food at home, you can have cooked rice and "butong- butong" or rock salt.

20. You crave for batchoy, inasal nga manok, pantat, talaba and dinuguan.

21, Your greens on the table consist of apan-apan, adobo nga takway,amargoso nga may itlog, alogbati with baringon, linutik nga labog, puso ka saging nga may baboy, tambo and tugabang.

22. When having a feast and your budget is not enough to serve the whole baranggay KBL is the answer.

23. You like pinasugbo, barquillos and biscocho.

24. Iloilo Fastfood icons are Roberto's, Dinagyang siopao, Ted's La Paz Batchoy, JD, Summer House and Kongkee restaurant.

25. You've watched a flick or two at Allegro, Regent, Crown and Cinema.

26. Grocery Shopping is done at Ledi Supermart or Iloilo Supermart.

27. In going South, you hold your breath while traversing that long bridge in Guimbal so your wish can come true.

28. Joyride means taking a Jaro CPU or a Molo City High jeepney.

29. You buy shoes at Sam's.

30. You stroll down Calle Real if you are looking for bargains.

31. We give nicknames to certain group of people in our province like "first class ang ticket" for Lambunaonons, "daw taga-Dumangas ka" if you are moving to slow in waiting for a jeepney, "taga-Interior" if you are speaking a "crackling and fast" dialect.

32. If Koreans use 'yo' or 'hamnida' in every word, sentence or phrase, "ang mga taga-siyudad" end theirs with 'ya'..."na ano na sya ya?" "indi ko ya," "wala na ya," "pabay-i lang ko ya," "labot mo ya."

33. When we are so incensed, we call forces of nature "linti," "kilatan ka tani"

34. You have played pityaw, Ins, Baggle.

35. You can find a multitude of XY chromosome at John B and WIT.

36. You don't know what's inside the Iloilo Museo because you havent been there all your life or you made a random peek in preparation for a foreigner friend coming.

37. You are familiar with Graciano Lopez Jaena, Franklin Drilon, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Niel Tupaz, Dr. Rolando Padilla, Dr. Greg Tirador, Dr. Alejandro Rivera,Eddie Laczi,Quido Parcon, Jenil Demorito,Roding Ganzon, Rogelio Florete, Noring Espanola but you have no clue as to who Gen. Martin Delgado was. All you know is that Delgado "twinkles" at night and he's friends with Mabini whose neon lights invite throngs of "hungry souls."

38. When ask for a historical landmark, all you could think is Miag-ao church.

39. Our "sugat" never hurts nor bleeds.

40. Our "pating" flies and never swims.

41. Our "usap" can be crunchy or loud but devoid of words.

42. We wear 'bayo' and 'kamiseta' all the time without costing a fortune.

43. You've tuned in and listen to "Sino ang May sala?,", "Toyang Ermitanya," "Provincial Jail," "Dear Diary," and "Hutik sa Kagab-ihon."

44. You are alarmed upon hearing the name of "Tinyente Guimo."

45. Bombo Radyo's Hot Panawagan was once a substitute to sending a telegram or a text message of this era.

46. When the weather gets too hot, you go to SM City "para magpalamig."

47. When you take a jeepney in Manila and you want to signal the driver to pull-over, you shout "sa lugar lang," or "break...break."

48. When you feel aggrieved, you'd quip "Isugid ta ka kay tatay/nanay or sa magulang ko."

49. Drinking spree is called "priming."

50. Carinderia thriving on every street corner is called "mikels," and you are fond of buying peanuts along the street plus telling the vendor, "damua bi ajos ko 'nong."

How l miss the good-olde-days driving the Ungka-lloilo route. Is there still HUTIK SANG KAGAB-IHON?

klarohon ta lang sa "butong butong" or rock salt, kay butong2x is kalamay nga gina butong2x mo para mag form nga daw tudlo ka dako nga dulsi. kag ang tol.tol amo naman na ang tawag sa asin.

Thank you very much for this blog. It reminded me of the good old days in Iloilo and I laughed a lot, I love these!! I have been living "down under" for 30 years away from the Philippines, and it is lovely to read this blog!! xx
